Nominations for 2023 Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award are now open!

Period 23 May 2022 ~ 08 July 2022
Location Bucheon

Bucheon City, a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, is now accepting nominations for the awarding of the 2023 Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award.

The central theme of the award is diaspora, a broad term that encompasses all human activities in which people transcend ethnic and regional identity by leaving their former home to expand their sphere of living. The award is an ternational literature award for novels that capture such stories.

With the exception of self-nominations and books that are out of print, anyone can submit a nomination for their favorite book as long it is a full-length novel on the theme of diaspora written in Korean or English by a living author.

To submit a nomination, applicants need to fill out the application form available on the official BUDILIA website (https://www.budilia.or.kr → Nomination) between May 23 and July 8.

Nominated works will be evaluated by a Nominations Committee and Judging Committee comprised of experts from academia and the literary world, with one novel selected as the final winner. The author of the novel and the translator (if applicable) will both receive a plaque and prize money (50 million KRW for the author, 10 million KRW for the translator). The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in October 2023. More details can be found on the official BUDILIA website.

Bucheon also uploads a variety of easily accessible short-form content, the ‘Snack Culture’ series and more through the BUDILIA’s official website, Instagram and YouTube in order to help raise awareness about the concept of diaspora.

“This award carries symbolic meaning because in essence, we are all diaspora,” said Ha Jin, the inaugural winner of the BUDILIA for his novel A Free Life. “We need to travel to other places in order to build our own homes and discover the meaning of our lives. I am truly grateful to have received this award.” This award is highly unique and symbolic.”

The Judging Committee is currently hard at work reviewing the nominations for the 2022 BUDILIA, with the shortlist to be released in July and the announcement of the winner to come alongside the awards ceremony in October.
