To commemorate Bucheon’s induction as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, the 20th Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF) will feature a ‘Special Exhibition on Animation & Literature.’
The special exhibition will feature film screenings and exhibits with commentary, including Extraordinary Tales, an omnibus animated film directed by Raul Garcia that is based on the works of famous detective fiction writer Edgar Allan Poe, and Poem To The Mysterious Woman, an animated film directed by French filmmaker Antoine Coppola that incorporates 13 poems by French poet Robert Desnos, a writer who was held in high regard by legendary Surrealist André Breton. BIAF 2018 will feature special talks given by the directors in addition to the movie screenings.
Extraordinary Tales is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s fifth novel, featuring a unique style of graphic design. The film vividly conveys the nightmares and terror that are a prominent feature of Poe’s writing, and has a star-studded lineup of voice actors including Christopher Lee, Guillermo del Toro and Roger Corman.
Director Raul Garcia was involved in the production of numerous Disney classics including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King and Pocahontas, as well as Fantasia 2000, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie at Paramount Pictures and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, which received an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature. He is currently the chair of the Academy’s International Film Festival subcommittee.
Poem To The Mysterious Woman is a collaboration by a number of young animators from leading French animation schools such as Les Gobelins, Angoulême and La Poudrière. Notable among the 13 works included are Paris, which depicts Desnos’ life through a soundtrack mixed with images of the gravel streets of Paris at night, and Couchée, which draws attention.
Director Antoine Coppola is a respected poet, filmmaker and film scholar who hails from Provence. He is the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, a famous French director known for classic films such as The Godfather series.
The Special Exhibition on Animation & Literature will feature a number of exhibits and books on display. In partnership with BIAF, Korea’s largest publishing house Min-Eumsa has released a special edition series of five of Poe’s books for this special event, and an exhibit exploring the production process of Extraordinary Tales can be viewed in exhibition room 2 on the 1st floor of the Korea Comics Museum from October 19 (Fri) to November 11 (Sun).
As Korea’s first film festival to be officially endorsed by the Academy, BIAF 2018 will take place from October 19 - 23 with events across a range of venues including Bucheon City Hall, the Korea Comics Museum, Bucheon CGV and Megabox COEX.
