An exciting thread of connections between Bucheon and Angouleme

Period 28 January 2020 ~ 01 February 2020
Location Angouleme, France

Last January, the delegation of Bucheon City of Literature visited Angoulême, France on the occasion of the 47th Angoulême’s International Comics Festival.

The city of Angoulême joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of literature on November 1st in 2019, and invited other cities of literature to its symbolic event to celebrate the designation.

Partnership has already been established through comics since the Korea Manwha Content Agency(KOMACON) and La Cité Internationale de la Bande Dessinée et de l’image(CIBDI) began exchanging their experiences in 2011.

Confirming that Bucheon and Angoulême are on the same page when it comes to fostering unique artistic nature and creativity of comics, the two cities signed on the Memorandum of Understanding on 29 January in Angoulême (Signed by Mayor of Bucheon City, Chairman of the KOMACON, Mayor of Angoulême and CEO of the CIBDI)

The UCCN membership will further bring the two cities closer to explore fruitful linkages and collaborative projects building on their shared interest and commitment to make culture as a driver and an enabler of the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development.

Angoulême’s International Comic Festival

The former industrial city has transformed into cultural city visited by a number of artists, professionals, publishers and comics admirers alike.

Since the launch of the festival, Angoulême has built an ecosystem comprised of 12 schools, 30 comics related companies, and 75 companies dedicated to animation, digital and multimedia for the development of the comics and image industry. Its vision and serious attitude toward the industry and culture are indeed inspiring and empowering, and Bucheon should take its cue from them.

Comic books, Bandes dessinées in French(BD for short), is referred as the ninth art and enjoyed by people in France. For the city of Angoulême, known as capital of comics in France, comics are more than just an annual event.

The festival spread out in venues across the city with an array of exhibitions about books and authors. What is the most significant about the Angoulême’s festival is its embrace of comics from around the world. You will be amazed by its extensive coverage of comics around the world.

We look forward to the continued, active and synergistic collaborations with Angoulême, contributing to the promotion of cultural diversity. What can Bucheon offer?

Webtoon originated in South Korea and has been recognized as an independent genre of popular culture that appeals to a broad audience of all ages. Korea is one of the leading countries in the global comics market, and Korean comics have a growing presence in France and other parts of Europe although printed comics are still preferred in such regions. With advance in technology, webtoons are expected to gain more popularity, attracting a wide variety of audience.
