Bucheon City led the successful bid to become a UNESCO city of Literature, the first in Asia and the 21st among the world’s prestigious network of recognized cities. Our permanent designation as a UNESCO Creative City enables Bucheon to obtain sustainable urban development focused on people and the respect of human rights.
With a firm belief in the power of literature to change people’s lives and the world, as witnessed by its turbulent history, Bucheon expects to have achieved the following:
01Global support and admiration for its new development strategy focused on culture and creative industry inspired and led by literature encompassing comics, animation, and notification.
02Steady increase in the number of citizens producing as well as consuming books and stories: 2 programs training 30 teachers per year.
03Global citizenship education (GCED) through literature at 30% of high schools: 6 programs training 90 teachers per year in partnership with UNESCO APCEIU.
04Modest commercial success of the first works produced through collaboration of people working in literature, film, comics, graphic novels, and animation, brought together by the UCCN framework.
05Active exchange with other cities in the Network, leading to the start of residency programs and inauguration of the Bucheon Pearl Buck International Prize for Diaspora Literature to commemorate the author's life, work, and ties with Bucheon.
Discover more about UNESCO City of Literature, about what it means for Bucheon and the other cities of literature around the world. It goes without saying we’re proud to be part of such a magnificent organization, and to share its aim.
It’s the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, set up in 1945 to “build peace in the minds of men and women”. It encourages people to work together not just economically or politically, but on scientific, creative and cultural levels. It seeks to be the “basis of humanity’s moral and intellectual solidarity.”
UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The 180 cities which currently make up this network work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level.
The Network covers seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Arts, Media Arts, Film, Design, Gastronomy, Literature and Music.
Twenty-eight cities are currently part of the Cities of Literature network. The UNESCO designation "Creative City of Literature" recognizes excellence and places an obligation on communities to nurture and support their art form and collaborate internationally.
By joining the Network, cities enhance their creative potential for sustainable urban development, exchange know-how and cooperate on an international level.
Being a City of Literature is a permanent designation, like a World Heritage site such as the Pyramids and the The Great Wall of China, and sharing the accolade with all these great cities:
